Sammie Szmodics bagged a wonder goal to help Colchester United seal victory at Wycombe Wanderers – and ensure his grandmother’s pre-match prediction came true.

The 20-year-old was told by his nan before the game that he would net at Adams Park and her forecast proved correct, after the forward’s spectacular first goal of the season wrapped up a fine win for the U’s over their old foes.

Szmodics told the Daily Gazette: “My nan doesn’t really come to away games but we got her ticket and she told me before the game that I was going to score.

“I said to her “you say that to me every game” but luckily the ball’s come to me and I’ve hit it and it’s gone in.

“It was great that I scored at that end because I had my mum and my nan there as well as my mates - it was lovely to score in front of them and all of the fans.

“I’d been chomping at the bit to get a goal and now that goal’s gone in, hopefully lots more will follow.

“I’d missed a chance earlier in the game that I'd have taken in training all day long so I took all of my anger on that shot and luckily, it went in.”

Szmodics’ fine strike at Wycombe followed shortly after he provided the assist for fellow forward Chris Porter to score Colchester’s opener.

The former Stanway School pupil said he was glad that both were able to get off the mark, following their strikes against the Chairboys.

“For us to both get a goal and an assist was great,” said Szmodics.

“If we’re back against it, we know that instead of passing it up through the back we can just go forward because it sticks to him like glue.

“We link up all week and we know where each other are.

“It had been frustrating not to score before now.

“I’ve had meetings with the gaffer and he said I’d been doing everything but score.

“I got six goals in pre-season which I think was my prolific pre-season I’ve ever had so coming into the league, I was feeling confident.

“But every game that goes by without scoring, your confidence goes.

“I wanted to show to the gaffer and to the fans that I can score and I can play well and I think I did that.”
