John McGreal said it was important Colchester United bounced back to winning ways following their impressive 2-0 triumph at Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon.

Second-half goals from Chris Porter and Sammie Szmodics helped the U's claim victory at Adams Park, helping them respond perfectly to suffering their first league defeat of the campaign at Portsmouth last weekend.

U's head coach McGreal said: "It was a really important win for us as a club, especially after last week (against Portsmouth).

"I reiterated to them throughout the week that if you want to be a good team, you don't really lose two games in a row.

"I thought from minute one right the way through, they were outstanding.

"Wycombe do what they do well and they play to their strengths, similar to the way we do.

"We coped with them particularly well and we had opportunities in the first half to score which we didn't take.

"But we regrouped at half-time and the mentality from the boys was terrific.

"They led it themselves in the second half and you saw how much it meant to them."

Porter and Szmodics both netted their first goals of the season against Wycombe, to lift Colchester to fourth in the League Two table.

“It’s great that they both scored - we need our goalscorers to score," added McGreal.

“The first goal was vital – we finished the first half better but then they came out and got a bit of a head of steam.

“But I thought our back four and the keeper were fantastic and gave us the platform to build on and I’m always confident that we can score, because we have that quality in the team.”
