Witham Cricket Club captain Jake Wakelin insists his team are not out of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship title running.

A 110-run defeat by Sudbury last weekend saw the Suffolk side reclaim the top-flight summit and, with three games left to play, put them in pole position to take the division one crown.

The result wasn’t the one Witham were hoping for and Wakelin admits their batsmen, who have performed so well this year, had an off day, however, he and his players aren’t prepared to give up on the title just yet.

They head to third-placed Mildenhall today, looking to bounce back strongly and Wakelin knows they must keep the pressure on Sudbury.

He said: “The guys are hurting as it was a big chance for us to put one hand on the prize.

“We just have to bounce back now and brush that under the carpet.

“We won seven in a row heading into that game and had you offered us one defeat from eight heading into that run then we’d have taken your hand off.

“Unfortunately the one defeat was against Sudbury.

“However, it’s pretty much certain that we won’t finish lower than third and that in itself is a great achievement for this club.

“Sudbury have some tough games coming up as well and we know that anyone can beat anyone in this league so it’s not over.

“It’s still all there to play for. We haven’t been saying we will win the league, but we believe we can do it.

“Sudbury are in the strongest position, but they can slip up and we have to be in the right position to take advantage if they do.

“We have to concentrate on our game each week and make sure we get 20 points from each of our three remaining games.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t the right result for us last weekend, but we still believe that three wins in our last three games will give us a good chance to win the title.”
