Colchester United manager Tony Humes is hoping to secure another new signing today.

The U’s boss says he is “very close” to adding a midfielder to his squad, having already snapped up three defenders this summer.

George Elokobi’s arrival has further strengthened Colchester’s defensive options for the new season, following the earlier captures of Richard Brindley and Matthew Briggs.

Now Humes will turn his attentions further up the field, with more signings imminent.

Colchester have been linked with a move for midfielder Joe Edwards, who is a free agent after leaving Yeovil Town at the end of last season.

He told the U’s website: “You look at what we’ve got - a good bit of experience, a blend of youth too and cover across all positions.

“The priority we needed to look at from last season was to establish a stable back four.

“Those three on permanent contracts means we have plenty of bodies there and we shouldn’t have to go into the loan market in that area.

“My next priority is a midfielder with a bit of experience but someone who is a good age, too.”
