THREE days of intense competition brought Copford powerlifter Mick Amey a hat-trick of titles at the Single Lift World Championships in Telford.

The 65-year-old grandfather undertook the gruelling challenge of lifting on all three days of the competition and it paid rich dividends as he broke national and world records in becoming World champion in three disciplines.

Amey was competing in the 82½kg body weight class for over-65s and the opening day’s squat competition saw him make a superb record-breaking start.

He smashed a world record that had stood for 20 years as he surpassed the previous best by 22½kg in lifting 192½kg.

That was world title number one and Amey was soon adding the bench press crown to his list as the following day saw him lift 105kg for a new British record, but there was still one more day to go before he could achieve his treble dream.

Amey said: “By this time, both the harsh judging and the strain on my body were starting to show.

“This unfortunately showed in the deadlift.

“It is all about pure power rather than technique, but against all the odds, I managed to pull a 220kg lift to take the world crown and complete the hat-trick.

“I must thank my son and coach, Ashley, for all the hard work and knowledge he puts into me getting these results and thanks also go to Mad Cycles and Essex Electronics for their continued support.”

Amey’s next challenge will now come at the full three-lift World Championships that he has qualified for in Sicily in October.
