A CHARITY is preparing to distribute more than 5,000 emergency packs to support Braintree and Colchester families-in-need.

The Cadent Foundation is working alongside community charity partner Groundwork to deliver essential items to those living in fuel poverty.

The packs, which are part of the charity's annual Winter Warmer Campaign, are filled with warming essentials such as hot water bottles and blankets.

Director of the Cadent Foundation, Julia Dwyer, said: "Even though it might feel that we are through the worst of the energy crisis, cost of living challenges remain very real for thousands of families.

"We’re still hearing stories from people who are choosing not to turn their heating on this year because they are terrified of not being able to pay their bills."

Graham Duxbury, chief executive of Groundwork, added: "Although we all want to see long-term solutions for fuel poverty put in place, having access to winter warmer packs is invaluable in helping to provide immediate reassurance and comfort to those who need it most."

According to recent government data, it is estimated about 3.17 million people are currently living in fuel poverty.

The figures have led to the Cadent Foundation and Groundwork to work together to help address the issue.
