NEW houses are expected to be built next to a busy road despite safety concerns raised by councillors.
Ross Bain has applied to build nine properties on vacant land in Gosbecks View, Colchester, which lies next to Gosbecks Road.
Blueprints show the development will offer a mix of four, three and two bedroom bungalows alongside a three bedroom house.
The land has already been earmarked for development as part of Section 2 of the Adopted Local Plan which has allocated up to 150 new homes for Shrub End.
Colchester Council’s planning committee is expected to approve Mr Bain’s application when it meets on November 9.
It comes despite concerns shared by Shrub End councillor Sam McCarthy, who fears Gosbecks View will become overwhelmed by the extra road users.
He said: “Gosbecks View is a narrow country road that simply cannot cope with more cars utilising the road, let alone pedestrians and cyclists.
“There's no pathways planned. This causes serious safety concerns for current and potential new residents.
“Refuse collection is already difficult, with a refuse vehicle causing damage in the past.”
Maypole county councillor Dave Harris revealed he has been contacted by residents who have their own concerns about the access road.
“The worry, which is real, is the new houses will reverse onto what is a well-used pedestrian walk route,” said Mr Harris.
“Also, the passing places, it is thought, will be used for visitor parking and thus the road will no longer have users able to pass safely.”
However, Essex Highways determined the impact of the proposal on the road infrastructure was acceptable.
But the applicant must provide turning facilities and vehicular accesses on the new site’s internal roads.
A total of almost £81,000 will be pumped into both community facilities and sport and recreation from the developer.
The money will be used to help improve the swimming pool at Leisure World and the car park at Gosbecks Archaeological Park.
It will also be put towards works at All Saints Church, in Shrub End Road.
