A STOLEN moped has been reunited with its owner and two people have been arrested in connection with the theft.

Essex Police said it had received reports of a moped being ridden anti-socially in Dragoon Road, Colchester, at about 2pm and officers quickly established it had been stolen from another address in the city yesterday.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and remain in custody.

Ch Insp Colin Cox, district commander for Colchester, praised the swift action of officers.

He said: “Officers have responded quickly to this report and were able to establish the moped had been stolen.

“They acted swiftly to attend the scene and make arrests. The vehicle has already been returned to its owner.

“CID are now carrying out the investigation.

“Tackling vehicle crime is a priority for us and we know the impact it can have. It matters to you, so it matters to us.”

The police force has now urged anyone who might have witnessed the theft to come forward.

“If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us,” a spokesman added.

Dragoon Road is off Cavalry Road in the Christ Church area of the city, close to Abbey Field.

Data published by the Gazette last month reveals Abbey Field is the area which has the fifth highest crime rate in Colchester, behind the city centre which tops the table with 34 per cent of the city’s crimes reported there.

The latest incident comes just days after a motorbike was stolen from outside the home of an NHS worker in Bardsley Close, Mile End.

Footage of the theft was captured on CCTV by neighbours, but police officers were unable to identify the people seen in the video.
