AN NHS worker’s life has been turned upside down after their motorbike was stolen from outside their home.

A rider made off with the motorbike from Bardsley Close, Colchester, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

CCTV footage seen by the Gazette shows two people working to start the white bike just before 2.30am.

One of the crooks is then spotted getting on the back of a moped scooter, driven by a third person, which then leaves the scene alongside the stolen vehicle.

The owner of the motorbike, a healthcare assistant at Colchester Hospital, was at work at the time and was alerted to the theft by eagle-eyed neighbours before reporting it to the police.

But despite the shocking incident being captured on camera, police officers have been unable to identify the three people seen in the footage.

The frustrated motorcyclist has been forced to rely on public transport while his insurer investigates the circumstances.

They told the Gazette they feel more needs to be done to prevent and detect crimes in Colchester, particularly in areas which are dark at night.

“We need more CCTV cameras in Colchester,” they said after learning a police investigation had been halted.

The Mile End resident thanked their neighbours for responding quickly to the incident and for providing the footage.

'We take vehicle crime seriously'

Essex Police said its stolen vehicle investigation unit “robustly investigates vehicle crime” alongside “dedicated resources” locally, adding officers “continue to follow all lines of inquiry to identify and arrest offenders”.

A spokesman for the force confirmed officers are aware of the reported theft and an investigation has been completed.

They added: “Despite inquiries having been made, unfortunately the investigation has been assessed as having no further reasonable lines of inquiry to identify [the people in the CCTV footage] at this stage.

“Should any new reasonable lines of inquiry be identified, we will not hesitate to pursue them.”

Police officers have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or with information which could assist the investigation to get in contact.
