A PENSIONER who died after being struck by a vehicle in a supermarket car park has been named for the first time.

Patricia Jepson, 85, was "hit by a vehicle" in Waitrose car park in St Andrews Gardens, Colchester, on August 19.

Ms Jepson, who lived alone, was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, for further treatment after emergency crews were called at about 2.50pm.

Essex Police confirmed her injuries were extensive and sadly she died from them in hospital nine days later.

An inquest into the pensioner’s death was opened and adjourned at Essex Coroner’s Court this morning (Tuesday).

A post-mortem examination carried out by Dr Swift confirmed she died as a result of her injuries.

A section of the supermarket car park was cordoned off as paramedics rushed to her aid following the collision.

They had been attending a less serious incident nearby to the scene and arrived within minutes.

Essex Police spokesman said officers’ inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Ms Jepson’s death continue.

He said: “The driver of the car, a man in his eighties, is assisting with our investigation.

Area coroner Michelle Brown said the police have requested a suspension of Ms Jepson’s inquest for six months.

Speaking following the incident, a Waitrose spokesman said: “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the woman’s family and loved ones.”

“We hope any additional safety processes identified can be implemented as speedily as possible.

“I am sure the entire community shares these views.”

Police inquiries are being led by the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, which has appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

“If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us,” added the spokesman.
