A PENSIONER may lay claim to be being the unluckiest homeowner in Colchester after his garden wall was wrecked for the third time this year.

Colin Lythgo, 73, is being driven up the wall by motorists who lose control of their vehicles outside his house before smashing into his brickwork.

The retired concrete floor layer has lived in Mersea Road, Colchester, for 14 years and has seen his garden wall reduced to rubble on at least eight other occasions.

But his rotten luck has worsened this year, with the structure being destroyed for the third time since January during the early hours of Monday morning.

Despite the relentless crashes, Essex Highways did not confirm whether it would consider installing traffic calming measures in the road when approached by the Gazette.

Instead, a spokesman advised Mr Lythgo to contact his county councillor Dave Harris.

Mr Lythgo said: “I fear someone will have to be killed before something is done.

“Every night we hear motorbikes and cars screeching around the corner. It’s like a racetrack.

“They leave the Willows roundabout and put their foot down as fast as they possibly can.”

The pensioner said he was in bed with his wife when the latest incident took place.

“We heard the car come round the corner so fast then all of a sudden we heard this big bang and the wall was gone," he added.

“When I went outside to see the damage there was a car on its roof and my wall in pieces. It made me feel sick.”

Mr Lythgo said it costs him hundreds of pounds every time his wall is destroyed.

He has even offered to pay for a solar powered speed warning himself if Essex Highways will permit its installation.

Maypole county councillor Dave Harris said he fears the authority is “not listening” to the resident or himself.

He added: “This is happening regularly at this site, always at night and always the result of speeding cars.

“The risk of speeding cars here needs attention. Protection of my constituents living in Mersea Road needs bringing to the fore.”
