FIREFIGHTERS got their hands dirty while rescuing a curious dog which got stuck in the mud.

Two fire crews were called to the River Blackwater in Coggeshall, near West Street, this afternoon (Thursday).

They found five-year-old Irish Wolfhound Wallace who had taken a dip in the river but couldn’t get back out over the thick mud.

His owner Julie dialled 999 shortly before 12.45pm and was advised to not enter the water herself as it could put her in danger.

Crews from Harlow and Chelmsford then arrived at the scene to undertake the 40 minute rescue operation.

Thankfully, Wallace was reunited with Julie safe and sound.

Harlow crew manager Lee Hempenstall said: “Crews did a great job helping Wallace out of the river and back to his very thankful owner.

“We know lots of dogs like a dip to cool down and sometimes they do struggle to get back out.

“As hard as it must be, our top advice would be to stay out of the water yourself.”
