COLCHESTER High Street is set to be transformed into a race track during a day of high octane soapbox rallies next month.

The brand new event will see non-motorised, handmade soapbox cars go head-to-head in time trials as they race through the city centre.

A 300m racetrack will be in place in High Street as the decorated vehicles take to the track from 10am on September 17.

There have been more than 50 entrants accepted to compete on the day and spectators will be able to line the city centre for free.

Here’s all you need to know ahead of the exciting event:

What exactly is a soapbox rally?

Teams enter handmade karts and compete in head-to-head time trials to determine the winner of the event. The most notorious example is the Redbull Soapbox Race.

Can I enter a kart?

Not anymore, no. Entries closed on August 4. However, you will be able to watch the event for free in the city centre where there will be food stalls and additional entertainment on offer.

How long is the event expected to run on for?

The rally will take place in Colchester High Street from 11am to 7pm. However, the event itself and entertainment will kick off at 10am.

What competitions will there be?

There will be two sets of winners. Those who place first, second and third in the time trials and the entrant with the most creative soapbox design.
