A DETERMINED youngster has raised more than £500 for charity by cycling 200 miles, despite being in the wrong gear for half of it.

Kindhearted Chloe Long, 12, has furiously pedalled across all corners of north Colchester from her family home in St John’s throughout August.

The Gilberd School pupil’s admirable efforts were made after she spotted an advert encouraging people to help raise money for Prostate Cancer UK on social media.

Chloe’s mum Megan Rowley, 33, said the family has been affected by a number of prostate cancer diagnoses, including her uncle.

Megan said the family has been left “in awe” of young Chloe’s pedal-pushing efforts as she totted up 206 miles across 14 days this month, raising £530 in the process.

Her gruelling campaign concluded in Colchester on Wednesday.

“She loves going out on her bike and this cause felt so close to home with members of the family who have either just recovered from prostate cancer or are still battling it,” said Megan.

“My uncle, who has prostate cancer at the moment, said how brilliant Chloe is for doing this.

“He said he and many others really appreciate it and how everyone is so chuffed with her.”

However, it wasn’t all plain cycling for Chloe, who previously attended Friar’s Grove Primary School.

Megan, who is due to start teacher training next month, said her daughter spent half of the fundraiser unaware of what gear to be in when.

But after a handy bit of guidance from Megan’s partner Dean, who accompanied Chloe during the rides, there was no stopping her.

“He told her to change her gears and when to be in which gear and after that she was off, there was no holding her back,” added the mum.

Megan paid tribute to her daughter, adding: “I am in awe of her all the time, we all are. She is just so inspiring.

“She has inspired her nine-year-old sister to get on a bike which has been great to see.”
