NEW university students could receive thousands of pounds worth of support as they embark on their studies.
Essex University has launched a new package to support UK students from low-income households starting courses at its Colchester and Southend campuses this autumn.
Eligible first year students will be able to apply for a bursary of £2,000 to help with accommodation costs, in addition to an existing £2,000 means-tested cash bursary.
New students are also being offered an extra £2,000 award for on-campus accommodation if they achieve three Bs in their A levels or the equivalent in other qualifications, taking the total support to a maximum of £6,000 per student.
Essex Students’ Union president Kieran Phillips felt the move was a step in the right direction and said: “The university has rightly recognised the current financial climate, and I hope that this will allow even more students to join our vibrant Essex community and get the education they deserve.
“This offer on top of the work being done by the SU and the university to support our students through the cost-of-living crisis continues to show our commitment to ensuring students are allowed to flourish and achieve their goals.”
