A FISHING shop has announced it will be closing its doors after more than 80 years of selling equipment to keen fishermen.

Wass’s Fishing Tackle was originally opened in Mersea Road, Colchester, in 1935 before relocating to Long Wyre Street and then Copford in 2002.

It is thought to be one of the oldest fishing tackle shops still trading in the country, but is now set to shut for good.

A statement released by the London Road business said the decision was taken “with great regret”.

“This is not an easy decision and we have thought long and hard about ways that this could be mitigated but there are too many obstacles both past and present,” it reads.

“Due to the lasting effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the current economic circumstances, trade is becoming harder and making a profit even more so.”

The shop received a devastating blow when its previous owner William Wass died after a short illness in late 2019.

The 81-year-old took over ownership of the shop from his father who founded it in 1935.

“When he passed away nearly four years ago the business just wasn’t the same without him,” the statement continues.

“Perhaps after he died things just weren’t meant to carry on.

“He was the spirit of Wass’s and we are sure everyone will agree it was Will Wass that made Wass’s Fishing Tackle the amazing, friendly place it was and he will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

A tribute was also paid to the customers and staff who have supported the shop throughout the decades it has been open for business.

The shop added: “We have had so many loyal customers over the years, many of which have become friends.

“Finally, we would like to thank Paul, John, Neil and Colin for their continued efforts, they never gave up and stuck by us when times were hard.

“[They are] fantastic employees and we are very lucky to have them. Also to our fantastic customers once again for supporting us during this difficult time.”

A closing date has not been announced but is set to be confirmed in due course.
