WORK continues on a bakery giant’s newest Colchester site.

Greggs is due to open a new drive-thru bakery at Colchester’s Northern Gateway Leisure Park.

The Northern Gateway project is expected to be complete in the autumn.

The bakery chain, best known for its sausage rolls and steak bakes, edged closer to completion of the new store last month when Colchester Council approved plans for four fascia signs to be installed.

Images in the planning application show the building will boast the brand's signature blue and orange branding, and new photos show the new bakery is coming together nicely, with the instantly recognisable shade of blue already dominating the storefront.

The new bakery will be in good company, with Wendy’s, Cineworld, and Travelodge also opening on the site.

It will be the brand’s sixth location in the city, adding to an extensive portfolio which contains bakeries in High Street, Long Wyre Street, St Christopher Road.

There are also two Greggs stores in Stanway at Stane Park and at the Stanway Retail Park in Peartree Road.

Colchester Council has also given the green light for Greggs to put up signs at 40 Culver Street West, which is almost directly opposite Greggs’ current city centre location and was previously occupied by JD Sports which is now based in Lion Walk Shopping Centre.
