A MUM-of-five who was diagnosed with cancer has been named a hero for continuing to serve her community.

Nikki Ranson was nominated for the award - run by Culver Square shopping centre in Colchester - by her daughter Aimee Greatorex.

Ms Ranson is a single mum of five children, two of which have additional needs.

Last year she was diagnosed with cancer and underwent 12 months of treatment with two major surgeries.

However, Ms Ranson, who is the supervisor of a foodbank, continued to help others despite her challenges.

She has now been named as the first deserving winner in the Culver Cares campaign to highlight local heroes.

During her recovery, Ms Ranson continued to work from home and returned to work as soon as possible to carry on supporting the team and the community.

Ms Greatorex said: "She doesn't take praise very well as she feels it's her passion to help, not a job.

"My mum works seven days a week non-stop.

"Her colleagues would agree that she is an unsung hero in the eyes of many."

Ms Ranson is someone who is dedicated to serving her community and helping others despite what is going on in her own life.

Culver Square centre manager David Robertson said: "I found it a great pleasure to work together with Ms Ranson over the last two years on the Giving Tree Campaign.

"I experienced first-hand the selfless dedication she gives to the families supported by the food bank.

"We are so proud to offer the chance to recognise key members of our community with this award."

Each month, Culver Square will reward one person or group in Colchester who has gone above and beyond within the community.

A spokesman from Culver Square said: "If you know someone with community spirit head to the Culver Square website and complete the Culver Cares form.

"What classes as community spirit is open to interpretation.

"In essence, anything where the nominee has gone above and beyond to help those around them.

"This could be supporting young people or the elderly, volunteering or raising money for charity, the list is endless.
