Cuts in fuel duty were welcomed by many last week, but for most commuters, petrol prices were already so high that the 5p reduction still had us filling up cautiously.

Prices are still far higher than last summer, when fuel at Colchester’s cheapest petrol station (then Sainsbury’s) cost at 127.9p per litre.

Times – and costs – have changed markedly since then.

Here is this week’s run-down of the priciest and cheapest petrol stations throughout Colchester.

1st – BP, Ipswich Road: 164.9p per litre

Regularly up there with some of the most expensive petrol stations in Colchester, this BP on Ipswich Road tops the table again for the most expensive fuel. A full tank here costs £98.94.

2nd – Texaco, Mersea Road: 163.9p per litre

This petrol station is not much cheaper than its BP rival. A full tank here comes in at £98.34.Gazette: The BP on Ipswich Road is regularly one of Colchester's most expensive petrol stationsThe BP on Ipswich Road is regularly one of Colchester's most expensive petrol stations

3rd – Texaco, Shrub End: 160.9p per litre

From one Texaco to another, this forecourt charges 3p less per litre despite it being only two miles away from the Mersea Road Texaco. A 60-litre tank here costs £96.54.

4th – Tesco (Highwoods), Tesco (Hythe), and Co-Op, Peartree Road

The prices start to come down at supermarket chains. Both Tesco stores, as well as the Co-Op in Peartree Road, will charge £95.94 for 60 litres.

7th – Sainsbury’s, Stanway: 158.9p per litre

Sainsbury’s is up there with the cheapest in Colchester, with a full tank here costing £95.34.

8th – Asda, Turner Road: 158.7p per litre

Asda is always there or there abouts when it comes to cheap fuel, and this week it has claimed top spot as the least expensive place in Colchester to get fuel. A full tank here costs £95.22.
